Start Climbing the Mountain

On the Rise!

Moving Right Along

Brian Davis suffered his first loss of the season and the Dragons took a pretty thorough beating this past weekend at neighbor NB Huron.

Davis was the flight champion at 215 after pinning previously unbeaten Dallas Ratcliffe of Huron in the opening match. His lone loss of the season came in the 2nd round when he went up a weight class to challenge the 6th ranked heavyweight in Division 2. After putting the big man on his back, only to see him wriggle off the mat, Davis ran out of gas and was beaten by points.

The only other Summit grappler to earn a medal was RaShawn Jackson at 152. Jackson was (2-2) on the day but one of his losses came at 160 pounds.

After two tournaments and one quad, here are the individual recor:ds, with the team dual meet record standing at (0-7):

103 - Jay Gray (4-7)

125 - Chris Okler (3-9)

130 - Shaun Cahill (5-8)

135 - Jeremy Miller Jr. (4-9)

140 - Christian Lalone (6-7)

145 - Ryan Jackson (2-5)

152 - Rashawn Jackson (6-7)

215 - Brian Davis (10-2) , 9 pins

Look out for breakthrough seasons from the guys above and some excitement from some of the new guys in the mix.

Muskegon Man!

(Senior Dom Walker in Flight after a highlight reel throw of Taylor Trim in the Semi-Final match.  Walker got some redemption after a stinging loss to Trim at Hudson earlier in the year.)

Muskegon, MI - Following an exceptional Senior season for Summit Academy, Dom Walker decided to try his luck at Muskegon CC. The Freshman is working hard and getting great grades for the Jayhawks. Keep up the hard work Dom!

(Senior Dom Walker (Left) will take a 48-5 record into the State Finals in Auburn Hills, in quest of Summit's first EVER State Championship!)

 Dominique Wins Regional

Manchester MI - Individual Region Champion.  That is something that sounds too good to be true, but Dom Walker now carries that Medal and Momentum into the State Finals March 12th-14th. Walker made quick work of Austin Spieth of Reading in the first round and disposed of Brandon Goethals of Addison with relative ease.  He then found himself wrestling a familiar foe.

 Gabe Elliott of Hudson.

Elliott was a 5-0 victor over Walker back in January at the Hudson Super 16 Tournament and held a 2-0 record in their career against Dominique.  This bout was different from pillar to post. Walker made a nice counter move in the first period to stave off a nice takedown attempt by Elliott, and found himself unable to make an escape in the 2nd period.  When Elliot went down in the third, Coach Szuch decided to have Walker give up the escape and go after the Hudson standout on their feet once again.

Dom would make his coach proud.  He pushed Gabe around the mat and landed a thunderous applause from the Manchester Gymnasium with a beautiful throw that found Elliot on his back in the middle of the mat.

It gave Walker the points he needed in the end, as Elliot was able to make an escape and score a takedown with around :25 seconds remaining. Elliot gave up the escape and trailed 6-4 when the Hudson faithful jeered the refs to make a takedown call after the wrestlers had been whistled out of bounds.  Walker then threw Elliott to his back once again and held him there unti time expired, but was mysteriously not given credit for the takedown or nearfall as time expired.

Regardless of the mysterious no-call on the takedown at the end of the match, Walker had won Summit's first ever Regional Championship!

Brian Davis made a valiant effort to advance but came up just short battling the big boys at 285.  Davis will be a formidable big man next season, and deserves credit for turning his season around and improving on the mat and in the classroom.

NEXT EVENT:

Dominique Walker's Quest for GOLD

The MHSAA State Final at The Palace of Auburn Hills can be an overwhelming event. I challenge the students and staff of Summit to come out support Summit Academies first ever Regional Champion as he takes on the best 189 pound wrestlers in the State.  Walker has grown by leaps and bounds and stands poised to take a crack at MHSAA Immortality.

Junior Brian Davis (215) is the leading wrestler who will be returning to the Dragon Lineup next Winter. Brian's goal is to find himself standing on the podium next March with a State Final Medal. Mr. Davis will be one of the Captains for the 2009-2010 Season.  Stay Tuned for an announcement about other Captains for next season.

I want to say hello to all former, current and future Summit Academy wrestlers, fans and supporters.

My name is Neil Szuch, and I am excited to take over at Summit for the 2008-2009 season.  The Dragons will be on the rise!

My coaching experience is from Carleton-Airport, where I was an official assistant coach from 2006-2008, and a volunteer coach since my graduation from Airport in 2000.  At Airport I was on the coaching staff of two consecutive District Champions, and on the floor for the schools first and second MHSAA State Champions.

I am looking forward to bringing an exciting style of wrestling and an increasingly challenging schedule to the Dragons.  My focus will be on challenging Summit wrestlers with stiff competition during the regular season, so that the postseason wrestling will not catch our wrestlers by surprise.

This website is under construction, please be patient as I adjust to the new school!
